Australian Open 2018: January 22nd Men’s Singles Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

[2] Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Marton Fucsovics (HUN) – Federer has won 3 matches quickly and at night.  If he gets a 4th quick win in the day, the 36-year-old defending champion will be looking at needing 9 sets with some rest built into the system to win major #20.  It is not a done deal by any means, but phase 1 went well for the defending champion.

[14] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Hyeon Chung (KOR) – Novak and Andre have a combined 10 Australian Open titles to their names.  This surface typically plays in an ideal fashion for Djokovic.  The more rust he knocks off spells bad news for the rest of the draw.

[19] Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs. [25] Fabio Fognini (ITA) – Berdych dominated JMDP.  Fognini could find some unexpected shots and make a match of this.  It will require a lot of consistency on Fognini’s part.  I am not sold on that outcome.

[5] Dominic Thiem (AUT) vs. Tennys Sandgren (USA) – Thiem is seeded 5th but is floating through the draw with very little attention.  That could be good for Thiem.  His hard court game is still a work in progress, but if he finds the right combination, Thiem can emerge from the pack.
