Roland Garros: Men’s Match of the Day – June 6th 2019

Stefanos Tsitsipas (6) vs. Stan Wawrinka (24)

This is a generational clash.  Tsitsipas may have a win over each of the big 3 in the past 52 weeks, but Stan Wawrinka also holds 3 majors titles, a gold medal in doubles, and a Davis Cup title in his career.  To be sure, Stan has what Stefanos seems so intent on claiming.

Wawrinka also had nice sparring practice in a rugged 3-set win over Grigor Dimitrov.  Wawrinka just played a match against another opponent with a single-handed backhand.  Stan is battling to reclaim some lost territory due to injuries and some poor luck.

Tsitsipas moves well, hits great ground strokes, and plays with an intensity and ambition that seem to tag him for even bigger results in the future than his impressive previous 52-weeks.

Winning here will come down to Tsitsipas’ youth and variety matching up with Stan’s blunt force power and iron will. The winner may get to tangle with Federer for single-handed backhand supremacy in Paris.
