Roger Federer (4) vs. Stan Wawrinka (24)
Roger Federer has generally dominated his head-to-head with Wawrinka. In 2015, Wawrinka beat Federer en route to taking the Roland Garros title. A match between two former French Open champions in the quarterfinal with a likely date against the greatest French Open champion of all time in the semifinal makes this a can’t miss match.
For Federer to win, he needs to use variety, attack the net, and not let Stan’s power dictate play. If conditions are heavy or slow, Federer is not in an ideal spot. Stan’s power can hit through those conditions.
Conversely, Stan has to find a way to ground Federer with power and keep his countryman from carving up the court. Stan faced Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas in each of the previous rounds. These two players are probably the best preparation a player could face prior to taking on Federer.
