Wimbledon 2017: Gentlemen’s Quarterfinal Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

CENTRE COURT (1 p.m. start)

It will be closer than their Aussie encounter, but I think the result will be the same

[1] Andy Murray (GBR) vs [24] Sam Querrey (USA) – I think Sam Querrey will win a set in this match.  He is playing well and is showing a lot of ability in 2017.  Injuries have hurt his career trajectory, but Querrey is making amends.  Still, Andy Murray is a 2-time Wimbledon champion and the defending champion.  Murray’s return of serve, movement, and overall feel for the game will eventually overwhelm Querrey.  Murray in 4

[3] Roger Federer (SUI) vs [6]  Milos Raonic (CAN) – Roger Federer lost to Raonic in 5 sets last year while playing with a bad knee.  That means an easy Federer win as he is more healthy now, right?  Not so fast.  Raonic is playing his best tennis since the 2016 World Tour Finals.  Milos just won a huge match and should feel battle tested coming into his showdown with Federer.  Still, I think Federer is a 60-40 favorite to take this match.  If Federer can return with some accumen, the Swiss may win quickly.  Otherwise, expect a marathon that could go either way.  Federer in 4 or 5

No.1 COURT

[7] Marin Cilic (CRO) vs [16] Gilles Muller (LUX) – Cilic was in this spot 1 year ago and had match points to reach the Wimbledon semifinal round.  After that frustration, Cilic did take a title in Cincinnati, but he lost from 2 sets up in the deciding match for the Davis Cup.  I think Cilic will be more fresh and will likely eventually overwhelm Gilles Muller.  Gilles Muller’s recent run of solid to excellent play on grass means he has a shot to continue a cinderella run at Wimbledon.  Cilic in 4

[2] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. [11] Tomas Berdych (CZE) – Novak Djokovic has been playing better since the start of the Rome Masters 1000 event.  He won a grass court tune-up and is now ticked off at the tournament organizers.  That likely all adds up to a long day for Tomas Berdych.  I think Novak wins in 3 or 4 sets.
