[1] Karolina Pliskova (CZE) vs. [6] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) – This is a good opportunity for Pliskova to lay the groundwork for a sustained run at the top.  Of course, a title in NYC would go much further.

Lucie Safarova (CZE) vs. [PR] Sloane Stephens (USA) – Stephens is playing well, but in comebacks from injuries sometimes consistency is hard to find.  Safarova is ever so slightly favoried in my view.

[4] Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP) vs. [5] Elina Svitolina (UKR) – Muguruza’s Wimbledon title could be her springboard to #1 or will she have 50+ weeks of uneven results?  Doing well in Toronto could help give some indications of which direction things are headed.  I have confidence that Muguruza will handle major #2 better than her first.  A quarterfinal finish in Toronto would be a bit of a wait and see, but a semifinal or better result would offer positive feedback to Muguruza after her Wimbledon triumph.

[2] Simona Halep (ROU) vs. Caroline Garcia (FRA) – Halep played reasonably well at Wimbledon and in DC.  Can she gear up for a run at the US Open?
