Australian Open 2021: Day 5 Men’s Singles Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

Rod Laver Arena (11 a.m. start)

[6] Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. [32] Adrian Mannarino (FRA) – This probably won’t happen, but my gut feeling says upset.
[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. [27] Taylor Fritz (USA) – Fritz has had a nice event. Novak will advance.

Margaret Court Arena

[15] Pablo Carreño Busta (ESP) vs. [18] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) – PCB would benefit from slower conditions.
[11] Denis Shapovalov (CAN) vs. [20] Félix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) – The dynamics of their friendship plus Shapovalov sometimes having clunky matches make this hard to predict. If they both play reasonably well, I think Denis wins at this stage of their careers.

John Cain Arena (Noon start)

[8] Diego Schwartzman (ARG) vs. [Q] Aslan Karatsev (RUS) – Diego is the wrong opponent for a potentially leg weary qualifier.
[3] Dominic Thiem (AUT) vs. Nick Kyrgios (AUS) – Kyrgios has a puncher’s chance, but unless he can exploit Thiam surrendering real estate by returning from very deep, I don’t think Thiem has to worry.

1573 Arena

[14] Milos Raonic (CAN) vs Marton Fucsovics (HUN) – We should not forget that Raonic was close to an Australian Open final in 2016.

Court 3

[23] Dusan Lajovic (SRB) vs. Pedro Martinez (ESP)
